How to Make Moka Pot Coffee
The Moka pot is a popular choice because it brews a strong and rich espresso-like coffee with minimal effort. Its unique design and stovetop brewing method make it a convenient and cost-effective way to enjoy a flavourful cup of coffee at home.
What Do You Need?
Moka Pot.
For a standard 3-cup Moka Pot, use about 15-17 grams (1 to 1.5 tablespoons) of coffee grounds. Use an espresso blend, like our Hemp Blend, for this brewing style.
Towel or oven mitt (for handling the hot Moka Pot).
Espresso cups.
Note: if you have a smaller (or, larger) Moka Pot scale the amounts prescribed appropriately.
Step #1
Prep & Preheat
Start by heating your water in a kettle. Bring it to a boil and then let it cool slightly while you prepare the Moka Pot.
Disassemble the Moka Pot into three parts: the bottom chamber (water reservoir), the middle chamber (coffee filter), and the top chamber (coffee collector).
Fill the bottom chamber with hot water up to the safety valve, just below the valve or line inside the chamber.
Place the coffee grounds into the coffee filter, levelling it off without pressing down.
Now, reassemble the Moka Pot.
Note: ground coffee should be at a consistency similar to sand for optimal extraction. For best results, order our whole bean coffee and grind to size. If you are unable to do this, order the espresso grind.
Step #2
Boil & Brew
Place the Moka Pot on a stovetop burner set to medium heat. Use a low flame for electric stoves to prevent overheating the handle.
The Moka Pot will begin to gurgle and hiss as it brews. The brewed coffee will start to fill the top chamber.
As soon as you hear a hissing sound or notice the coffee flow slowing down, remove the Moka Pot from the heat source. This indicates that the brewing process is complete.
Step #3
Serve & Enjoy
Carefully pour the freshly brewed coffee into espresso cups. Moka Pot coffee is strong and concentrated, similar to espresso.
